Celebrated on the third saturday of October, sweetest day was first observed a by Herbert Birch Kingston who worked for a confection company at Cleveland, Ohio to express love and care for those who were neglected by the society. Thus in 1922 on this day he started giving boxes of chocolates to the unprivileged children and hence this day came to be known as Sweetest Day. On the first Sweetest Day, Ann Pennington, movie star, gave over 2,000 Cleveland newspaper boys boxes of candy to show her gratitude for their service to the public. Theda Bara also distributed 10,000 boxes of candy to residents of Cleveland hospitals and anyone who came to see her at the local theater.
